Top 3 Wrong Practices - Mains Preparation & Answer Writing:

1. Writing 10 to 20 tests to learn how to write answers.

2. Writing answers without consolidating on the content.

3. Coverage of Syllabus through question compilations and test series.

How should one go about mains preparation answer writing practice?

Step 1: Read standard textbooks and other material from an understanding point of view and make quickly revisable notes on it. Without doing this, everything else is a futile exercise. You get maximum marks only for "Content", rest is just refining and polishing effort.

Step 2: Once you are done with step 1, check your writing speed. Your writing speed depends on two things. 1st if your handwriting technique - Take a pen of your choice, take a newspaper and mechanically write 1000 words every day for one week, if you are writing 1000 words in about 35 minutes, you are good to go on this aspect. 2nd thing which affects your writing speed is your thought processing speed, the speed at which you can process thoughts directly depends on how good your notes are and how quickly can you revise them. If you have sorted these two issues, you gain a major advantage in the preparation.

Step 3: Once you are writing answers in the specified time limit, you can get your answers evaluated to see if they are being written in the manner required for UPSC CS Mains exam. The parameters are discussed in the video and the evaluation sheet containing the parameters can be downloaded from this page. If you consciously write about 30 to 40 answers to score a "good" grade in all those 9 parameters, your content delivery and structuring in the answers will be more than decent. You dont need to write 10 to 20 tests to just learn this, it's sheer wastage of time, resources and your hard earned money.

Step 4: After completing the above steps, simulate yourself to the real exam conditions by writing tests as per the timetable of mains exam. That is to at least write 4 full length tests in 2 consecutive days so that your body gets accustomed to the mental and physical stress levels associated with the real mains exam. You can simulate it as many times as you wish. The more, the better. You can write these tests at home or anywhere else, you don't need to get your answers evaluated during this process because it's already done in step 3. This is your final step and after this, you will be ready to conquer the battle.
